Archive - Carina Massone, 1935

Climbing until the air runs out.

In 1935 Carina Massone set the world altitude record for a propeller-driven aircraft. A pioneer Italy has almost forgotten, and whom the papers of the day called a heroine of the skies.

High-altitude flight is the hardest test for a machine and for whoever flies it: the air thins, the engine loses power, the cold gets in everywhere. You climb as long as you can, and then a little further.

The model takes its front and its temple tips from the Corsair, one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built: the curve of the nose and the wing root, carried over into acetate.

Two hundred and sixty-two operations, none of them automatic.

From cutting the sheet to the final check, a Corsair goes through seven stages and two hundred and sixty-two separate operations. Polishing is the longest: the acetate turns in the drums and then returns to the hand, until the surface stops resisting the light.

A piece that fails the twenty-one measurement checks gets no number and never leaves the workshop.

In the photos Olive looked like army green to me; in person it is dark, almost bottle glass. In one week two people stopped me to ask where I had got them.

I have very fair skin and red hair, and Ginger could have been made for me. In the sun it turns honey-coloured; in the shade it goes dark again.

Well balanced; they don't slide even when I lean over my workbench. The hard case is bulky, though: it fits in a bag, not in a jacket pocket. Hence four stars.

I knew nothing about Carina Massone. I read her story in the booklet on the train, and once home I went looking for everything else. The glasses are beautiful, but she is what stayed with me.
