Charles Lindbergh in front of the Spirit of St. Louis, archive photograph
Archive - Charles Lindbergh, 1927

Thirty-three hours over the water.

On 21 May 1927 Charles Lindbergh took off from New York aboard the Spirit of St. Louis and landed at Le Bourget thirty-three and a half hours later, non-stop and without a radio. Four thousand eight hundred kilometres, alone, with nothing ahead but water.

He had stripped the aircraft of everything that did not help it fly, the forward windscreen included: he looked out through a periscope and a side window. A hundred thousand people were waiting for him in Paris.

The model that carries the name of the first Air Force One comes from the same idea of aerodynamics: technical joints left in sight, and no detail that will not hold the wind.

Two hundred and sixty-two operations, none of them automatic.

From cutting the sheet to the final check, a Sam goes through seven stages and two hundred and sixty-two separate operations. Polishing is the longest: the acetate turns in the drums and then returns to the hand, until the surface stops resisting the light.

A piece that fails the twenty-one measurement checks gets no number and never leaves the workshop.

I travel a lot for work and they live in my bag, not treated gently. After six months the hinges are as firm as on day one, no play at all.

The joints between front and temples are precise: you can tell they are handmade, but nothing is approximate. Mine is number 37 of 150; I checked the certificate as soon as I opened the box.

Smoky is a translucent smoke grey, lighter than it looks on screen, and I like it better that way. The missing star is for the courier: a day late, and a missed-delivery notice without anyone having rung the bell.

Ordered on Monday, delivered on Wednesday. The box also held the cloth and the Flyper card, a careful touch I did not expect.
