Archive - Amelia Earhart, 1932

She crossed the Atlantic twice.

In 1928 Amelia Earhart crossed the Atlantic as a passenger, and it was not enough for her. On 20 May 1932 she left Newfoundland alone at the controls: fourteen hours and fifty-four minutes later she landed in a field near Londonderry.

During the flight she lost fuel and watched the exhaust manifold catch fire. She did not turn back. Few people have become legend in a way so adventurous and so mysterious.

The model dedicated to her has the sunken front and the wraparound line of the 1930s screen stars: it looks out without being looked into.

Two hundred and sixty-two operations, none of them automatic.

From cutting the sheet to the final check, a Tempest goes through seven stages and two hundred and sixty-two separate operations. Polishing is the longest: the acetate turns in the drums and then returns to the hand, until the surface stops resisting the light.

A piece that fails the twenty-one measurement checks gets no number and never leaves the workshop.

The wraparound shape covers well at the sides too: driving into a low sun I no longer have to pull down the visor. And they suit me with my hair up or down.

I was afraid Ivory would be too white, but it is a warm ivory that looks great with a tan. It has become my accessory of the summer.

The light colour shows every fingerprint, so the cloth that comes with them lives in my handbag. One star off for that; everything else is flawless.

I gave them to my wife for our anniversary. She says they remind her of the actresses in black-and-white films; for me it's the first time in twenty years I've got a present right.
